In Mercury there is no atmosphere and it is full rock. Venus has thick clowds which does not let us see what’s below.The ground is very hot there. It rotates very slowly. Earth has atmosphere , trees, water etc and condition favorable to support life. Mars colour is red.It is dry and cold. Jupiter is largest planet of the solar system.It has many moons. Saturn has great rings.The rings are blocks of ice. Uranus and Neptune has atmosphere that Swirl.They have wispy white clouds.These planets are very cold.
The sun, the moon and all those objects shining in the night sky are called celestial bodies.
Some celestial bodies are very big and hot. They are made up of gases. They have their own heat and light, which they emit in large amounts. These celestial bodies are called stars. The sun is a star.

In ancient times, people used to determine directions during the night with the help of stars. The North star indicates the north direction. It is also called the Pole Star.
Some celestial bodies do not have their own heat and light. They are lit by the light of the stars. Such bodies are called planets. The word ‘planet’ comes from the Greek word “Planetai” which means ‘wonderers’.

The sun, nine planets, satellites and some other celestial bodies known as asteroids and meteoroidsform the solar system. We often call it a solar family, with the sun as its Head.
